What is a wand?

According to Pottermore Wiki, a wand is a magical object through which a wizard or witch channels his or her magical powers. We all know this, but do you know what materials are used to make a wand? 

Wands are made of different kinds of wood like sycamore, ash-wood, etc. Wands not only contain wood, but they also contain a magical substance called wand core.
